Educational Resume

The educational resume is a table of contents of your life’s work and serves as a table of contents for your portfolio. The resume is used to assess your learning in general and labor studies areas. It includes a chronological listing of your employment and other learning experiences.
Writing your resume helps you to begin the brainstorming necessary to develop your portfolio. Be as inclusive as possible and do not censor yourself. Organize your resume using the following sections:

  • Educational Objective
  • Employment
  • Academic Education
  • Labor Movement Positions
  • Academic Education
  • Other Training
  • Skills
Educational Objective

Use the educational objective to frame your educational experiences and goals.

Employment

Include employment categories from the age of 18 on. Use your chronological listings and resulting learning to show growth and development. Include Labor Movement Positions even if they were part time-or unpaid position.

Academic Education

Formal education, beyond high school, including your enrollment in the National Labor College, is listed in this section.

Labor Education

Include labor training in this section.

Other Training

This section is used to list training received from apprenticeships, the military, training schools, civic organizations, volunteer positions and other avenues.  Experience here can include volunteer activities (for example, work done in your community or in religious organizations) and hobbies.

Preparing your draft Educational Resume

Once you have taken some time to review the sample resumes and templates provided, start listing each category and entering data to each section.

Be sure to provide enough detail to make it clear. For example, when you list jobs and employers you have worked for, list the years you worked there and your responsibilities. For training entries be sure to list the number of hours and/or days that the training involved. This is critical information when you start writing Experiential Essays and ask for credit for some of the training you have taken.
