Narrative

The narrative is a brief autobiography. It allows you to present your life experience to the readers of your portfolio.

Use the narrative to describe your labor movement experiences, your educational goals and how they will impact and enhance your labor movement activities and personal aspirations. The narrative is an opportunity to discuss what you have learned in life, what else you want to learn, and how you hope to apply that learning.

The detail and length of your narrative will vary depending on the breadth of your experiences and your educational objectives.  The narrative format can vary, but it should contain the following elements:

  • Description of how you first became involved in the labor movement.
  • Positions you have held and/or activities you have been in involved with in the labor movement.
  • Positions you seek and/or activities within the labor movement that interest you.
  • Description of your educational goals.
  • An explanation of the relationship between your educational goals and your current and desired labor movement positions and activities.
  • A statement of how your National Labor College degree will impact your work within the labor movement and your life in general.

The Great River of Life and Work

Writing your narrative is like telling a story. If you have writer’s block tell your story to a note taking friend, a tape recorder, or to yourself. Use these written notes, tapes, and mental musings to complete your narrative.
