NOTE: THE ARCHIVES WILL BE CLOSED AUGUST 4-8.
The George Meany Memorial Archives (GMMA) administers the records management program for the records created by the AFL-CIO. Records disposition varies. Certain records must be retained temporarily for legal, administrative, or financial reasons before they are destroyed; other records must be retained permanently for historical reasons. The links below provide detailed information about the records management program, including transferring records to storage, requesting records center boxes, and requesting records from and returning records to storage.
Records Management Manual
To find out how to prepare records for transfer to storage, refer to the Records Management Manual. Please note that the Records Transfer Inventory (RTI) form (pages one and two) and box label are now available in electronic format as interactive PDF files (refer to the Records Management Manual for information about their use). Requesting Records Center Boxes
Use this online form to request boxes. If fewer than six (6) boxes, AFL-CIO departments and offices should request boxes directly from Facility Management. AFL-CIO trade and industrial departments and allied/constituency groups within the D.C. metropolitan area should use this form to request boxes directly from the GMMA (groups with field offices must supply and ship boxes to field offices). [TOP]
Requesting Records from Storage
Use this online form to request records from storage. Upon receipt of the online submission, GMMA staff will schedule delivery of records to you via the AFL-CIO's regular messenger service (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). There is no delivery charge for AFL-CIO departments and offices; however, AFL-CIO trade and industrial departments and allied/constituency groups will be billed for delivery of boxes via the AFL-CIO's messenger service. [TOP]
Returning Records to Storage
AFL-CIO departments and offices must call Facility Management to schedule the return of records to storage via the AFL-CIO's regular messenger service. AFL-CIO trade and industrial departments and allied/constituency groups must schedule the return of records to storage via messenger service. All records are to be returned to storage within one month of the date of their release, unless specifically requested and released for a longer period. [TOP]
Delinquent Returns to Storage
You will receive a notice of delinquency when you do not return records to storage by the due date indicated on the Records Release form -- generally, one month from the date of their release from storage. If you do not return records to storage after three months of their release, and you have not requested an extension beyond the due date, we will report the delinquency to Secretary-Treasurer Trumka and copy your department head. As a last resort, we will designate records you do not return as a permanent release to your department. You must contact GMMA archivists to schedule the return of records permanently released from storage. [TOP]
