AFL-CIO merger convention, 1955.
L to R: George Meany, president, AFL-CIO; Randolph, BSCP; Willard Townsend, United Transportation Service Employees; Walter Reuther, AFL-CIO executive committee. Randolph and Townsend were the only two blacks elected that year to serve as vice-presidents on the twenty-nine member Executive Council, the federation's governing body.
