Randolph meets with President Lyndon Johnson at the White House, ca. 1965.

Johnson was the first president of a major party ever to receive Randolph's endorsement. The pledge earned Randolph Johnson's gratitude. In 1965 Johnson named Randolph to the national advisory council of his billion-dollar War on Poverty program, and appointed Randolph as honorary chair of a White House conference on civil rights, held in June 1966.
