REPRESENTATIVES FROM ACROSS THE NATION TO PAY SOLEMN TRIBUTE ON WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY
Silver Spring, Md.-To honor the more than 5,500 workers killed every year on the job and at least 50,000 more who die of occupational diseases annually, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney will join National Labor College students, faculty and labor representatives from across the nation to pay tribute to the worker dead, and to urge increased safety measures for workers everywhere.
“Part of a solid labor education requires that we acknowledge those killed and injured on the job, not only to honor their memories, but to better understand the ongoing struggle for workplace safety,” said Sue Schurman, NLC President.
To mark National Workers Memorial Day, the National Labor College will welcome AFL-CIO President John Sweeney who will join a traditional candle lighting ceremony attended by more than 100 labor representatives, students and faculty. Mr. Sweeney will offer remarks followed by the calling out of names of the dead.

The NLC is located on the beautiful 47-acre George Meany campus in Silver Spring, Maryland. The NLC became a degree granting college in 1997, and in 2004, the college earned accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an independent, regional accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The NLC offers Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Technical/Professional Studies. Graduate programs are also offered at the campus in partnership with local universities.
